Dhokar Daalna

 Dhoka means 'to cheat' in sanskrit

History -

Dhokar daalna is a traditional Bengali lentil cakes curry that is served during the poojas or as a part of a meal.This lentils cakes cooked in tomato,jeera paste, ginger paste and little ghee before serving. It is a pure Sativk dish, that means this dish does not need neither onions nor garlic. This dish is also served during special occasions  like wedding to the widows who are not allowed to intake onions and garlic. Dhokar daalna is a favourite dish of most of the Bengalis.

Method
  1. Wash and soak the chana dal overnight. Grind it with a little ginger, salt and green chillies.
  2. Roast the garam masala, cumin and coriander (together and grind to a fine powder)
  3. Heat ghee in a kadai and fry the chana dal paste until dry.
  4. Spread the mixture on a greased plate. Cut the fried paste into diamond shapes and fry in deep ghee till golden brown.
  5. Now add the potatoes and fry till brown. Strain and keep asided.
  6. In the same ghee, add the ginger paste, powdered spices, chilli powder, salt and curd.
  7. Fry till the oil separates.
  8. Add water, the fried potatoes and bring to a boil.
  9. Drop the fried dhokars into the mixture and cook for 2 mins.
  10. Add ghee and garam masala and cook for a while.
  11. Remove from fire and serve hot with steamed rice.
